Here’s what’s going on!

Group Classes $99

Designed specifically for infants, toddlers, and preschool children, our “littles” group classes include Baby Lullaby, Toddler and Music, Preschool Music is Fun, and KiddyKeys.

For our youth, young adults, and adults there are a variety of group classes available. Offered this summer are Intro to Ukulele for Youth and Adults, Into to Guitar for Youth and Adults, Starting an Acoustic Band for Young Adults, Intro to Mandolin (adults), Intro to Bluegrass Jam (adults), and Music Theory.

We are also pleased to offer Musical Theatre for Kids, School of Rock, and Sound Mixing/Recording classes this summer!

GROUP CLASS DESCRIPTIONS- $99/class/session

BABY LULLABY
Available for infants 1 week to 1 year old and a parent or guardian. This class helps
to jumpstart baby’s developing mind through the art of music. Baby Lullaby focuses
on having fun with music while promoting brain development and uses all 5 senses!
Parents/Guardians will be required to stay with their child and participate
throughout the class. Baby Lullaby meets one day each week for 45 minutes. Come
and spend some quality time helping your infant to jump-start his or her

TODDLER AND MUSIC
Available for toddlers ages 2-3 and a parent or guardian. If you want to jumpstart
your child’s love of music, this class is for you! Through the art of music, Toddler
and Music focuses on having fun with music while promoting brain development
and uses all the senses. Parents/Guardians should be prepared to stay with their
child and participate throughout class activities and exercises. Toddler and Music
meets one day each week for 45 minutes. It’s a great way to help your toddler begin
a life-long love of music! Instructor: Lena

PRESCHOOL MUSIC IS FUN
This fun class is available for preschool age children, ages 3-6, who are interested in
exploring and learning more about the wonderful world of music. Preschool Music
is Fun focuses on having fun with music while promoting brain development and
uses all five senses. Unlike the classes for infants and toddlers, parents/guardians
are not required to stay for this class, but we welcome you should you choose to
stay! Preschool Music is Fun meets twice each week for 45 minutes. This is a great
class to help your preschooler develop a love of music at an early age!

Ensembles - $99

If you are looking for some opportunities to perform and make new friends, join us for our youth/young adult ensembles. Offered during this summer session are Beginning Band, Beginning Orchestra, Disney! Choir, and Top 40! Choir.

ENSEMBLE DESCRIPTIONS- $99/class/session

BEGINNING BAND
Beginning Band is open to any student who has never played a band instrument. Students will spend the summer focusing on:
– How to read music;
– Basics of the chosen instrument; and
– Concepts of performing with an ensemble.

Students will be coached using traditional teaching methods but will also engage in new learning activities designed to improve understanding within the ‘band world’. Students should expect to make practicing a regular activity as new material will be
added each class period. Throughout the course of the summer session band program, students will learn three to four pieces of literature, ending the session with a concert to showcase what they have learned. A sectional schedule will be announced during the first week of the summer session. Beginning Band students will meet for sectional work (similar instruments together) Monday-Thursday and for a full rehearsal with all instruments together on Friday each week. (Each student will meet twice each week: sectional-60 min, and full rehearsal-60 min.) Instructor: Mallory

BEGINNING ORCHESTRA
Beginning Orchestra is open to any student who has never played an orchestra instrument. Students will spend the summer focusing on:
– How to read music;
– Basics of the chosen instrument; and
– History of composers.

Students will be coached using traditional teaching methods but will also engage in new activities designed to improve understanding
within the orchestra world. Students should expect to make practicing a regular activity as new material will be taught each class period. Throughout the course of the summer orchestra session, students will learn several pieces of literature, ending the summer with a concert to showcase what they have achieved. Sectional schedules will be announced during the first week of the session and will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (similar instruments together) and for a full rehearsal with all instruments on  Mondays and Wednesdays- 60 min each class. DISNEY! CHOIR SUMMER CAMP
Want to learn how to open your voice to A Whole New World? Want to see How Far I’ll Go with music? Come learn how to Let It Go with your singing voice! This fun summer session will consist of using the ever-popular Disney songs to aid in learning the fundamentals of proper singing techniques, as well as learning to sing in parts. The repertoire will consist of a wide variety of Disney music, from today’s latest Disney hits all the way back to the very start of the Disney movie empire. Let us help you See the Light through Disney music! Be Our Guest and join us for an awesome summer of music fun! DISNEY! is available for students in grades 4
through 8th and will meet 3 days for one hour each week for the summer session. Instructor: Ali

TOP 40! CHOIR SUMMER CAMP
Do you want to have fun, sing, AND learn? This is the summer session for you! Our repertoire for this class will consist of some of today’s greatest hits on the radio with age appropriate lyrics!). But wait, there’s a catch! It’s not just today’s Top 40 hits that we will learn and sing. Any decade or century of popular music will be thrown into the mix and is up for grabs! We will also learn from some of the greatest choral hits of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century eras of classical music. In addition to all this wonderful music, we will review popular music from the last 100 years and provide students with a foundational understanding of the evolution of famous music in today’s world. We will also cover the fundamentals of proper singing, strengthen our ability to sing in parts, work on tuning and harmonizing, and gain more confidence in our singing abilities! TOP 40! will meet 3 days each week for one hour and is available for students in 7th grade through 12th grade. Come on down and spend your summer making beautiful

INTRO TO UKULELE- YOUTH, YOUNG ADULTS, ADULTS
These courses are designed for the complete beginner as well as students who have some knowledge of music and want to sharpen their basic skills. Classes are designed to provide students with the basic skills needed to start playing ukulele confidently. Students will have the opportunity to join with any of the strummer groups in the Black Hills. Included in the course is reading music and tablature but emphasis is on learning to play by ear and students will be making music during the first lesson. By the end of the summer, students will learn to play songs using all first position chords and to use different strumming techniques to create a more dynamic playing style. Students should have their own ukulele. An electronic tuner is recommended but not required. Course materials will be provided. The youth (ages 7-12), young adult 13-17), and adult (18+) classes meet once each week for 60 minutes. Instructor: Jim

INTRO TO GUITAR- YOUNG ADULTS & ADULTS
This course is designed for the complete beginner as well as students who have some knowledge of music and want to sharpen their basic skills. This course is designed to provide students with the basic skills needed to start playing guitar. The instructor has designed a course of patterned movements which will help students to play simple songs using most of the first position chords. Emphasis is on learning to play by ear and students should be making music in the first class. By the end of the session, students will learn to use different flat pick and finger picking techniques to create a more dynamic playing style. Course materials will be provided. Students should have their own guitar and strap. An electronic tuner is recommended but not required. Young adults (ages 13-17) and adults (18+) will meet in their respective classes for 60 minutes, once each week. Instructor: Jim

INTRO TO MANDOLIN- ADULTS
This course is designed to provide students with the basic skills needed to start playing mandolin. The course will cover reading music and playing tablature, but emphasis will be placed on learning to play by ear. Students will be making music during the first class. By the end of the course, students will learn to play songs using first position chords and play melodic leads on bluegrass and fiddle favorites such as Red-Haired Boy, Whiskey Before Breakfast, and Salt Creek. Course materials will be provided. Students should have their own guitar and strap. An electronic tuner is recommended but not required. The course will meet for 60 minutes one
day each week. Instructor: Jim

INTRO TO BLUEGRASS JAM- ADULTS
This course is designed for the advanced beginner who has basic knowledge of first position chords. Intermediate and advanced students will be provided with the basic skills and confidence required to join in any of the numerous music jam sessions held throughout the Black Hills. The course is open to all acoustic instruments and will be structured to teach students a basic song list used at many local jam sessions. By the end of the session, students will learn how to play a basic list of common jam songs as well as develop strategies for playing leads and singing lead and harmony. Students should have their own acoustic instrument. An
electronic tuner is recommended but not required. Course materials will be provided. This course meets one day each week for 60 minutes. Instructor: Jim

MUSIC THEORY
This class is open to any student who has a desire to learn more about the functionality of music. Students will be coached using traditional teaching methods but will also engage in new activities designed to improve understanding in the music world. Students should expect homework as new material will be added each class period. Throughout the course of the summer session, music theory students will progress at their own pace of understanding. Depending on time limitations and advancement through the books, students may end the session with a personal composition. The Theory class meets one day each week for 60 minutes. Instructor:

STARTING AN ACOUSTIC BAND FOR YOUNG ADULTS
This course is designed for the advanced beginner who has a basic knowledge of first position chords and to provide a basic repertoire of acoustic songs that include singing lead and harmony, taking instrumental leads and stage presence. At the end
of the session, students will have the opportunity to perform in the Batchelder’s Studio of the Arts Theatre. This course is open to all acoustic instruments and meets one day each week for 2 hours. Instructor: Jim

ADULT STRINGS: ($45/month)
If you have always wanted to learn to play violin, viola, cello, or bass, now is the time! Or, if you have been playing but still consider
yourself a beginner, come and join us! This class combines foundational strings methods, making music, and having a great time
meeting and learning together! Class meets once each week for 60 minutes. Instructor: Lena

MUSICAL THEATRE FOR KIDS!
Travel to the past where the Mississippi Delta was Queen and life was as simple as straw hats and bib overalls. A musical adaptation of the Mark Twain classic, Tom Sawyer, will provide your child with many great opportunities to experience the wonderful world of musical theatre.

Actors and Actresses will:
– Improve singing techniques by participating in vocal ensembles and (possible) solo performances. Vocal techniques covered include breath support, pitch accuracy, and proper posture;
– Further develop their sense of self and identity while also learning to develop their character on stage;
– Develop self-confidence as they prepare and perform;
– Explore talents they might not know they had;
– Improve fitness and coordination by learning and performing choreography;
– Improve communication skills as they listen to, and learn from, each other;
– Explore creativity while reinforcing safety, responsibility, and respect as they participate in the planning, designing, and building of the set;
– Expand friendships while participating in an activity that is lots of fun!

It is important that students be able to attend most rehearsals. A production performance will be held at the end of the summer session. Musical Theatre for Kids is geared toward students age 8 through 16. Rehearsals will meet twice each week for one hour. Auditions for specific roles will be held during the first week of rehearsals. A small amount of script reading, and singing will be part of the audition. All students who register for the class will be cast in the musical, but enrollment is limited to 20 students. Parent volunteers will be required to help with costumes and set design. Instructor: Laura

KIDDYKEYS
KiddyKeys is a new program for our Studio! This educational program focuses on teaching piano concepts and music appreciation to 3-6-year-old children. Meeting twice each week, this 30-minute class also emphasizes character development and will help build your child’s self-confidence by providing the opportunity for self-expression through a learning environment geared toward the individual needs of each child. The curriculum is play-based and engages each child in the learning process. Creative play promotes independent thinking and when children are engaged in an environment rich in hands-on teaching tools, they are more excited about learning!

A sample of what your child will learn:
– Rhythm and movement activities that will help develop small and large motor skills.
– Recognition of notes and note values.
– Memory and skill building through repeated music terminology.
– Counting exercises to help recognize numbers and develop math skills.
– Introduction to the music staff and keyboard.
– Reinforcement of listening skills by discerning high and low, loud and quiet sounds.
– Improved hand-eye coordination through hands-on experience with rhythm instruments and the keyboard.
– Activities to help with recognition of the music alphabet, colors, and shapes.
– Music story time focusing on composers, music terminology, and positive behavior (character traits).
– Creative development through sound composition and exploration.
– Development of verbal skills through group interaction.

BATCHELDER’ S SCHOOL OF ROCK!
Do you play an instrument or sing and want to learn more about perfecting your art? But you want more than ‘just’ lessons? Are you looking to be part of a group that has fun together making music? If your answers are YES, look no further! You won’t want to miss out on Batchelder’s School of Rock!

Offering different groups (combos- orchestra, band ensemble, and band with vocals), you are sure to find your new place! School of Rock is unlike anything else we’ve offered at the Studio of the Arts. It is a chance to be part of a group, make new friends, and work on something you love making music!

In the School of Rock, students will meet twice each week: once with their instructor in a one-on-one lesson and the second time as a group working to perfect your music! At the end of the summer session, each group will perform in a concert… with a judge! And, the winning group will get to ‘tour’ the Rapid City area! If you are interested in this exciting new opportunity to showcase your skills, please

SOUND MIXING/RECORDING MASTER CLASS
This class is for those who have dabbled in sound mixing and recording. The focus of this master class will be how to produce the best sound possible in different types of recording groups. The class will be taught be an instructor who has been in the recording business for 20 years and will include topics of: introduction to recording, the differences between Apple and PC, Logic vs ProTools, how to mic your instruments, and the best way to lay tracks. The minimum enrollment for this master class is 4 students and the maximum enrollment is 8 students. The class will meet on one Saturday (TBD) and the cost is $65.

Private Lessons - $70/$100 month (for Returning Students)

If you want to learn to play a new instrument, have just started to play an
instrument, or have been playing an instrument for a few, or many, years, sign up
for our Summer Session Private Lessons!

Private lessons on any instrument (band, orchestra, folk, piano) or voice are
available from our highly experienced and educated instructors. One-on-one
instructor time, personalized curriculum, customized pace, and faster progress are
all benefits of taking private lessons. Lessons are generally held once each week for
30 minutes ($70/month), but students can request 60-minute lessons
($100/month) if desired.
